Several types of banding have been used on White Storks in France

Since 2001 : Darvik rings

Since 2001, ringers have been using a Metal ring (short ring, type “CA” or “CK”, or long ring, type “P”, depending on the year) on one leg (tibia) and a White ring with a black code with four letters on the other leg (tibia). (See picture 1, photo S. Merle).

Currently, all codes used in France begin with an “A”.

What to do if you find a White Stork with this type of rings?

Find the code you read in the list check the ringer and its e-mail, and send him the whole data set, as showed below:

Color rings :

Before 2001, another type of banding was used: a combination of 5 rings, 4 colours + a metal ring,

Red, Yellow, Orange, Blue, White, Dark_Green are used; also Light_Green, but only when associated with the Metal ring.
Beware of storks who lost one or more rings: reading the metal ring number is therefore essential for identification!

Type of banding used in Alsace before 2001

In Alsace before 2001, ringers used a different type of banding: metal ring (long “P” ring) on one leg and colour ring with alphanumeric code on the other leg, always on tibias (see illustrations for sort of codes)

White, Black, Yellow, Blue, Green, Red are used, with a code:

  1. code with three figures,
  2. or code with letter A followed with three figures,
  3. or other codes (only one figure, underlined or not), but those codes are infrequent.
